In this lesson, you will learn simple words and how to introduce yourself in Arabic. First, very simple words are introduced :
English Arabic Pronouncation
Hi ahlAN ahlan
Welcome marHabAN marHaban
Bye (literaly means: peace) salaam salaam
Yes na3am na'am
No laa laa
Thanks SHokrAN shokran
Not at all 3af_wAN afwan
sorry aasef aasef
Now, we want to say the simple phrase (I am Mohammed). We should first mention an important note :
in Arabic ,and Egyptian, if the phrase doesn't contain a verb, the verb (to be) is assumed. So the verb (to be) is almost always omitted. Example : (I am Mohamed) will be in Arabic written like ( I Mohamed ) using the Arabic corresponding translation of each word. Similarly, ( You are Maryam ) will be ( You Maryam), and so on.
Now, the only thing we miss to write the phrase is the translation of (I = ana ), so the phrase will be : (ana Mohamed)
More words are listed below :
English Arabic Pronouncation
I anaa anaa
You (m.) anta anta
You (f.) ante ante
You (pl.) antom antom
He howa howa
She heya heya
They hom hom
We naHno naHno
The lesson now is done, you can understand the following conversation (it may look short and quite silly, but it's just for explaining :) :
Mohamed : ahlan, anti Jean ?
Maryam : la, ana Maryam.
Mohamed : aasif. ana Mohamed.
Maryam : anta Mohamed ? ahlan !
Mohamed : naam, shokran.
Maryam : afwan, salam.
Mohamed : salam.

Hi,

I would need some practice after I go through a lesson. Thanx anyway

gender ?

I learnt that except I, we, all of pronouns are two because of gender. But here it isn't like that. Which one is correct ?

re: gender

it's true, not only two, actually five: masculine, feminine, dual, masculine plural, and femine plural . Here we show only masculine, feminine and masculine plural (for simplicity reasons). so you see in the 2nd person pronoun: anta (masc.), ante (fem.), antom (pl.). same for 3rd person pronouns

why ?

why do you teach in that way ? Is it a true way to learn ?

re: why

the level of this lesson is for beginner, and it's not good to overwhelm a beginner with that much pronouns, so we teach the basic pronouns as a start ...

that's good

thats good. well, will you add new lessons with other pronouns ? also, I could learn all of pronouns by internet, just a day, yesterday. anyway, thank you.. salaam. Smiling

cant get the second lesson

why can i get the second lesson?

flash player is installed and i yet got the first lesson, but is still not working

thanks for an answer

re: cant get the second lesson

Wonderful site from a Chinese

I'm Chinese. I plan to visit the middle east in September so learning how to speak Arabic will be helpful I think. I find Arabic script beautiful. This site is really wonderful. Thanks to the people who created it. As in any language, learning a bit every day is important and so is perseverance.

Thanks Areg, from Malaysia

Thank you. I am learning Arabic for the first time, although I have been reading Quran in Arabic all my life. This is my first attempt/lesson, thus not much comments yet. I'm looking forward and will give comments later. Wassalam. Azmi

easier than Dutch:D

my dad is egyptian, and although I'm a bit of a nerd when it comes to learning languages, (I speak Dutch, English, French, German, Italian, Latin, greek and some koptic) this site is damn handy. and being a native dutch speaker, this site lets me see why dutch is such a horrible language to learn for non-native speakers... tamaan, Nederlands is veel moeilijker, ook al ben je de taal meester. security and peace upon you.
